You really need to see Belen if you want to grasp the poverty in Iquitos, Peru. Most of the people ther are wonderful, but remember, the back pack you are wearing is worth a months wages there.

When the Amazon is high the people have to build elevated sidewalks. In Peru the know they are on a flood plane and when the water is high they they make adjustments, not call out for federal disaster relief. Where is FEMA!

You need to go here so you will really relax when you get up into the Amazon. The jungle is really nice compared to Belen.

Just take some time to soak in the area. These photos may be as close as you want to get. The locals will all want to take you on a tour of Belen. Many tour companies will just get you out of town as fast as possible.

Elections

Alcalde didn't win.Tour companies are known to hustle their guests out of town as fast as possible, The jungle is a unique and wonderful place. They may figure that a few days in the big city will taint that experiance.
